According to police, a single-vehicle crash involving a rubbish truck has forced closure of a Kona-bound lane of Mamalahoa Highway (Route 190) at the intersection of the Daniel K. Inouye Highway (New Saddle Road).

Motorists are advised to avoid this location if possible and take alternate routes such as Waikoloa Village Road in Waikoloa and Kaiminani Drive in North Kona.

The collision scattered rubbish at this location, damaged a utility pole and wires and caused a fire, police said in a 3:45 p.m. written statement.

The approximate closure of this one lane is expected to be at least four hours.
